It's been said that to maximise your business you need to work every bit of space these days.

And that even goes for the ones where people like to park.

Licensees have been creating new revenue streams by renting out their car parks during quiet times of the day.

The extra income can be worth as much as £5,000 to a business. Morgan O'Kennedy (below), landlord of The Great Western in Basingstoke, earns more than £200 a month renting out parking spaces.

He said: "This is a no brainer for me. A lot of my spaces sit empty at certain times of the week so I thought why not make some extra money?

"I'm close to the station so we're the perfect spot for commuters travelling up to London and elsewhere."

Morgan uses spacehopper – a service that connects business spaces with drivers looking for places to park

Lee Blewett, landlord of The Bramley Inn, is another spacehopper customer. He has listed 10 parking spaces on the site.

He said: "I only recently signed up but I was really excited by the concept as I think it's an excellent idea. I'm looking forward to earning some extra cash and getting some regular parkers soon."

Spacehopper says that pubs near town centres or railway stations are the best placed to hire out spaces.
