A mother-and-son team at a Barnsley pub have received a prestigious award in recognition of their long service as they celebrate their 21st anniversary.

Pat and Richard McCool have received the long service award to mark their time at The Darley on the High Street in Worsbrough.

The occasion is a double milestone for Barnsley born-and-bred Pat, who has also clocked up 45 years of running pubs in Worsbrough.

The award from The Darley's owners – Star Pubs & Bars – marks the contribution that Pat and Richard have made to the community for more than two decades.

They have raised thousands of pounds for good causes and provided a much loved and valued hub for the neighbourhood. They are celebrating with a party for customers featuring a Neil Diamond tribute act.

Since taking over, the McCools have built up The Darley's reputation as a great community local where customers are assured of excellent beer, good conversation, a lot of laughs and, when required, support and a listening ear.

The Darley is a family affair. Richard's wife and daughter, Donna and Katey are very much involved with running the pub whilst Pat's husband John enjoys a pint and card games with regulars since retiring.

Pat, 73, said: "I wouldn't have missed the experience of running The Darley for the world. Seeing kids come in for pop and crisps with their parents and then grow up and come back with their own families is one of the things I enjoy most.

"I believe pubs have a really important role to play in society, as places where people can come together and socialise. You hear a lot about isolation and loneliness these days, a friendly local can be the perfect cure.

"When I started out in 1975 there were lots of pubs in this area but seven have closed and there's only a couple left now. Thanks to the loyalty of our fantastic customers, The Darley is holding its own. I've no intention of retiring any time soon and hope to have many more happy years here with Richard and the family."

Pat McGrath, Star Pubs & Bars area manager for Barnsley said: "It's an honour to present Pat and Richard with this award and a tribute to their talent and hard work. The Darley represents all that is best about the Great British local and the McCools are outstanding licensees."
