A new distillery is set to give the Welsh drinks scene a boost.

Drinks company Halewood Wines & Spirits, the outfit behind such brands as The Pogues Whiskey and Red Square Vodka, has announced plans to open a whisky distillery in North Wales – the region's first for over 100 years.

The Aber Falls distillery in Gwynedd will also produce gin and liqueurs and plans include a visitor's centre and training facilities.

"Halewood Wines & Spirits is looking to bring its extensive experience in developing craft spirits to North Wales," said chief executive, Stewart Hainsworth.

"We are currently working closely with North Wales Tourism and Gwynedd Council to finalise our proposals, which will help to regenerate the area and deliver a number of new jobs within the local community."

The project represented a "significant investment" for the company, he said.

Last month the company launched the UK's first Quince Gin under its Whitley Neill brand.
