Making a good coffee is harder than it looks and with the coffee market booming and competition high, you can't afford to serve a bad one.

Which is why UCC Coffee says it has launched a new training scheme, Coffee Works: Measure. Train. Excel.

It's a "unique, fresh" approach to coffee training says the company.

The programme encompasses a Coffee Excellence Check where individual sites or entire estates are assessed; tailored, practical training sessions and on-going site visits to ensure standards remain high.

"In an increasingly competitive market, consistency is more important than ever," said Gareth Davies, head of coffee excellence.

"To achieve it, you need three things – good coffee, good machines and good baristas. Controlling and maintaining your coffee and machines is simple. Ensuring uniform quality across all your baristas is the challenge. That's why we've developed Coffee Works – a tailored, practical and hands-on approach to training that can be delivered at scale, ensuring exceptional coffee, every time."

Inapub went along to meet Gareth and we got a few tips on making good coffee while we were there – including the secret of latte art. Check out the video above.

Coffee is an integral part of breakfast, of course – and bottomless brunches.
