Pubs will be accepting cucumbers instead of real money this World Cucumber Day.

Customers brandishing a cucumber instead of their wallets will receive a glass of Hendrick's gin & tonic this Wednesday (June 14) at a handful of Young's pubs.

The promotion is part of a link-up with Young's and gin brand Hendrick's, which distills gin infused with rose and cucumber.

One pub taking part in the day is the Canonbury Tavern in Islington, North London.

Manager, Karman Hanson, said: “Cucumber and gin just works. We’ll be using all the cucumbers we get as garnishes in the drink and it should be a fun evening.”

There are strict terms and conditions around the cucumber currency deal, however, as the pub stresses that no other elongated cylindrical vegetables will be accepted. Especially no courgettes.

Meanwhile, Hendrick's gin is encouraging people to grow their own cucumbers in anticipation of the day, to use specifically as a garnish.

The brand has provided a number of tips to help customers get involved and GYO cucumber.
