A survey of over 2,000 people suggests that younger drinkers will be tucking into old favourites such as brandy and Sherry over the festive season.

The research was commissioned by Global Brands for its Franklin & Sons range of mixers. It revealed that 13.6 per cent and 12.8 per cent of drinkers are planning to give brandy and Sherry a go – rising to 37 per cent among Millennials (18 to 34 year-olds).

The company suggests that it is the UK's rekindled love for tonic that is helping to bring back the drinks.

"Our findings show that the rise and rise of premium quality tonics and mixers is continuing, with consumers using their re-kindled love for a G&T to re-invent forgotten favourites such as Brandy and Sherry with tonic." explains Jen Draper, head of marketing for Franklin & Sons.

Global Brands joined forces with drinks experts Joel Harrison and Neil Ridley, authors of The World's Best Spirits, to come up with the recipe for the perfect brandy and Sherry with tonic:

World's Best Spirits' Brandy & Tonic Recipe

  • Use a lighter style of brandy, such as H by hine Cognac
  • Add two dashes of Angostura bitters (or if you can find it, Bitter Truth Chocolate Bitters)
  • Fill the glass with ice and top up using a chilled bottle of Franklin & Sons Natural Indian Tonic Water

Garnish the drink with a thin piece of orange peel, and express the zest over the top to bring out the wonderful citrus aromas

Franklin & Sons' Sherry & Tonic

  • Select a quality, dry and savoury sherry, such as Xeco Sherry from Jerez
  • Pour 50ml into a tall highball glass
  • Fill the glass with ice and top up using a chilled bottle of Franklin & Sons Natural Indian Tonic Water

Garnish the drink with fanned green apple
