TV chef Dan Doherty has re-opened the Royal Oak in Marylebone after purchasing the pub earlier in the month.

Previously called the Temperance, the Marylebone boozer is a typical 18th century London pub, which has been refurbished several times in recent years, and was renamed the Royal Oak during a re-fit in 2012.

Dan was previously head chef, then chef director, of Duck & Waffle, a restaurant located in Heron Tower, Bishopsgate, where he headed up the kitchen for six years delivering a 24/7 menu. Dishes include a signature dish of two waffles with crisp-skinned duck confit, a fried duck egg, and spiced maple syrup, and a smoked haddock scotch egg with curried mayonnaise, and crispy pig ear.

He has also been a judge alongside Mary Berry on the BBC's Britain's Best Home Cook, and a fixture on long running show, Saturday Kitchen. He recently opened a vegetarian pop-up at Harvey Nichols, dubbed Sprout, and has teamed up with catering firm Rhubarb to launch a concept in New York's Hudson Yards development.




Prior to today's opening, Dan said the pub has had a clean,  a kitchen put in, 'epic beers' installed as well as building the wine list.

According to his Instagram post, the food menu will be launched next week.

Announcing his purchase of the pub a fortnight ago, Dan said: "It's not in the best state, but it has a beautiful soul, one that we wish to bring back to life through plenty more hard work. We have put every penny we have into this, along with some trusty friends, and it'll take us a while to get it up and running but we will make this work."

Dan said that he had to deal with listed building consent, but unlike some operators who would close during a refurbishment, it would remain open.

He said: "I firmly believe pubs are the anchors in a community; facilitating great times rather than dictating them. Because of that, we want to share our vision with our community. We want you to see it at its worst all the way through to its best. With everything in-between."
