An Indian inspired recipe has helped a Bridgwater chef to be crowned the winner of The Great Sausage Roll Off 2020, raising thousands of pounds for charity.
Alan Chiltern from The Bower Inn in Bridgwater has won the competition with his Old English sausage roll with ground cumin, turmeric, fresh ginger, chilli and garlic with crushed caraway seeds served with apple and tamarind ketchup.
Hosted by award-winning food writer, Melissa Cole, The Great Sausage Roll Off 2020, back for its eighth year at The Red Lion in Barnes, saw 18 top chefs from across the country battle it out to create the best sausage roll.
Second place went to Amber Southon from The Quarryman's Arms in Corsham and Iain Devine, The Drunken Butcher, and Alan Paton Manchester and East Anglia Roll came third.
As well as the plate for the judges, each competitor supplied samples of their entries, which were auctioned off to the hungry crowd in aid of Hospitality Action.
Combined with a range of silent auction items, the event raised over £3,500 for the charity which offers support to all who work, or have worked within hospitality in the UK.
Claire Morgan, co-licensee of The Red Lion, said: "I am delighted that we have been able to raise so much for Hospitality Action too. Our customers' generosity is so humbling, I cannot thank them enough."
Mark Lewis, CEO of Hospitality Action, said: "I cannot thank the customers and sausage roll fans of The Red Lion enough, their generosity with their donations was incredible.
"We provide support for the chefs, waiters, housekeepers and managers. We're here for the concierges, receptionists and kitchen porters. And we're here for every sommelier, bartender, catering assistant and cook across the UK."
Alan Chilton, Sausage Roll Off Champion, said: "I'm overwhelmed to have won this award! This is the first cooking competition I have ever entered after over 20 years working in kitchens. My sausage roll was inspired by my travels around India some years ago. The day was lots of fun and it was great to meet so many other talented chefs."
