Accommodation and online experts met with pub bosses for the industry's first Profitable Beds event a few weeks ago.

Talk focused on how best to communicate your offer with guests. Here are a few tips we picked up from the gathering at Fuller's Counting House in the City of London.

1. Reward direct bookings

"If people book directly with you, do they get something for that such as a drink on arrival? Reach out to people when they arrive by asking if they would like to book a table." Alex Bufton, Guestline

2. Respond to reviews

"People used to tell a friend, now they tell the world. Respond to reviews and comments in the same way as you would to a person speaking to you in the pub." Francine Heywood, GuestRevu

3. Think beyond Blighty
"Think about overseas markets – 12 per cent of searches on Stayinapub are from outside the UK." Paul Nunny, Stay in a Pub

4. Be seen online
"Four out of five people prefer to book online. Google prefers words such as 'hotel' so make sure this is used to ensure you appear on searches. Make sure your website is responsive and user-friendly when in mobile – do the customer journey yourself." Ed Davies, Inapub
