We find out how this first-time publican recently turned around her Eastbourne seafront pub so that it was recently named Community Pub of the Year at Greene King’s Night of Excellence Awards evening. Speaking to her, it’s clear that she’s serious about the importance of pubs to neighbourhoods and it’s soon apparent just why The Crown is both an asset and a success:
“A pub should represent the whole community, not just be a niche” she says. It’s fair to say that Heidi and her team have had a huge effect on the neighbourhood in the 11 years that she’s been at the helm: creating more than 30 jobs from a premises that was previously underperforming, providing a service that is beneficial to all comers and aiding many local organisations by providing funds, space and support in a place where there was little before. The Crown and Anchor doesn’t merely benefit the community – like all great boozers, it is a community.
